The hadith concerning the exclusivity of purity of birth among Shi’as, narrated from Imam Baqir (pbuh) in the book Al-Kafi, has led to criticisms of Shi’a theological beliefs and the hadith sources of the Ahl al-Bayt (pbuth) school, underscoring the necessity of researching its implications. This article, while examining the chain of narration, aims to analyze the meaning and the jurisprudence of hadith (fiqh al-hadith) of the said hadith with an analytical-critical approach to uncover a robust meaning. The research findings indicate that the hadith’s chain of narration faces serious flaws, and traces of extremism are present in its chain. The text of the hadith also possesses unique content, making it difficult to accept that such a statement was uttered by an infallible Imam (Ma’sum). The term “baghy” used in the hadith encompasses any matters such as unlawful earnings or non-payment of divine rights – including Khums (alms tax) – that result in the impurity of offspring. Therefore, non-Shi’a children, for reasons such as not paying Khums, don’t have a legitimate birth. Furthermore, this topic can also be examined from a theological perspective, as the concept of “baghy” is a theological term referring to the matter of leadership (wilayah) and rebellion against an infallible Imam (pbuh). Given the evidence found in the research, this approach is also plausible in the considered narration. Additionally, the aforementioned narration is considered a secondary belief, and since the contextual evidence cannot conclusively establish the utterance of this statement by an infallible Imam (pbuh), Shi’as are not obligated to accept it.
