Hadith sciences can be applied across various fields of Islamic studies. One such discipline is Takhrīj—the process of sourcing and authenticating hadiths. The valuable function of this science, especially in theological contexts, is undeniable due to the centrality of belief in Islamic thought. This study highlights the necessity of employing Takhrīj in one of the major theological-philosophical-gnostic correspondences: a written exchange between two prominent Shi'a scholars, Ayatollah Sheikh Muhammad Husayn Isfahani and Ayatollah Sayyid Ahmad Karbalā’ī, addressing topics such as the simplicity of the Divine Essence, the unity of existence, and the relationship between God’s names and attributes. Commentaries and annotations by figures such as Allāmah Ṭabāṭabā’ī and Sayyid Husaynī Ṭihrānī also accompany this debate. The sensitive nature of the subjects discussed, along with the scholarly stature and influence of the participants within the Shi'a intellectual tradition, underscores the importance of precision in analyzing this correspondence and the need to apply Takhrīj rigorously. Engaging with this science is essential for avoiding fallacies, reaching accurate conclusions, preventing ineffective or misleading dialogue, and safeguarding against the misattribution of statements to the infallibles. This paper seeks to explore how the application of Takhrīj affects the outcomes of such theological debates, and how attention—or neglect—toward this science can alter the trajectory of scholarly discourse. The findings reveal instances of distortion, textual corruption, omitted chains of transmission, additional narrations, and pseudo-hadith statements, all of which emphasize the critical importance of engaging with Takhrīj in this context.
