Discourse analysis of Islamic interpretive heritage not only opens new avenues for applying modern linguistic theories to religious texts and examining their relationship with textual understanding, but also offers a fresh perspective on the comprehension of religion itself. A key aspect of this renewed approach lies in the fact that most research frameworks in discourse analysis emphasize the social function of language beyond its linguistic forms. This study aims, through a descriptive-analytical method, to explore the interpretive heritage of the Imamiyyah in Medina using Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse model. It considers the cultural, educational, political, and social structures within which the texts were produced, in order to arrive at a new understanding of Imamiyyah interpretive discourse. The findings indicate that the development of Imamiyyah interpretive discourse unfolds across three levels, shaped by the political, social, and cultural contexts of various historical periods: the phase of emergence and consolidation, the phase of expansion and flourishing, and finally the phase of stagnation and decline. The central signifier of this discourse is the emphasis on reviving and preserving the Prophetic tradition of Qur’anic interpretation. This effort generated a continuous interpretive flow led by the Imams (peace be upon them) as the principal actors (true interpreters), followed by their students as receptive agents who contributed to the continuity of this tradition. This interpretive current, from its inception to its decline, stood in contrast to rival discourses that held dominant political and social power. Such power structures restricted the dissemination of the Imamiyyah interpretive school and its discourse.
