One of the most important argumentative foundations of Sayyid ʿAbd al‑Husayn Sharaf al‑Din in al‑Murājaʿāt is his reliance on the Verse of Wilāya — “Innamā walīyyukum Allāh…” (al‑Māʾidah: 55) — to prove the specific wilāya and immediate imamate of the Commander of the Faithful, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (a). Despite the extensive attention given to this verse and to the status of al‑Murājaʿāt within Shiʿi–Sunni theological debates, a coherent and methodical analysis focused specifically on Sharaf al‑Din’s argumentative structure regarding this verse has rarely been conducted. Using a descriptive‑analytical method and a critical approach, and drawing upon sources from both Islamic traditions, this study re‑examines and evaluates Sharaf al‑Din’s arguments in the areas of the occasion of revelation, the lexical analysis of the term walī, the use of the plural form to refer to a singular individual, and the examination of the contextual flow of the verses of Sūrat al‑Māʾidah. The findings show that Sharaf al‑Din, by employing an interconnected set of shared narrative and exegetical indicators, and by simultaneously utilizing theological reasoning, rhetorical principles, and the norms of conventional discourse, seeks to elevate the implication of the verse from the level of “mutual friendship among believers” to “an explicit designation of Imam Ali’s (a) legislative authority and politico‑religious leadership.” At the same time, an external analysis of these arguments indicates that the success of this argumentative framework depends on accepting certain presuppositions regarding the authority of traditions on virtues (faḍāʾil) and the particular reading of the contextual sequence of the verses — a matter that simultaneously reveals both the potential of this model for inter‑religious dialogue and its points of challenge.
